Travel between Ayodhya and Sitamarhi is about to get smoother and faster. The Central Government has officially handed over the responsibility of constructing the Ram-Janaki Highway to Bihar’s Road Construction Department. This order was issued on May 5.
Project Highlights
The proposed Ram-Janaki Highway will begin from Mehrauna Ghat near the UP-Bihar border and pass through Siwan, Saran, East Champaran, Sheohar, and Sitamarhi, finally reaching Bhitta Mod near the Nepal border.
- Total Length: 240 kilometers
- Road Width: 70 meters
- Estimated Cost: ₹4800 crore
Construction & Tender Status
Section | Length (KM) | Estimated Cost (₹ Cr) | Status |
---|---|---|---|
Mehrauna to Siwan | 40 | 1254 | Tender issued |
Siwan to Mashrakh | 52 | 1351 | Tender issued |
Mashrakh to Chakia | 48 | 1450 | Alignment approved |
Chakia to Sheohar–Sitamarhi–Bhitta Mod | 103 | 2100 | Alignment approved |
Major Benefits of the Project
- Direct Religious Connectivity: Ayodhya will be directly connected to Sitamarhi.
- Boost to Pilgrimage: The highway will bring easier access to Punouradhham, associated with Goddess Sita.
- Infrastructure Growth: Multiple towns in Sitamarhi and neighboring districts will benefit from improved connectivity.
- Tourism Development: Easier access will encourage more visitors interested in Sita-related heritage.
Change in Responsibility
While the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will handle the Siwan to Mashrakh section, the rest of the highway — including Mehrauna to Siwan and Mashrakh to Bhitta Mod — will be constructed by Bihar’s Road Construction Department. This marks the first time the department will build a four-lane national highway.
Central Government Support
As the executing agency, the Bihar government will receive 3% of the total project cost, amounting to approximately ₹144 crore, from the Central Government. This fund can be used for other developmental projects within the state.
Did You Know?
- Earlier, a separate spur was planned to connect Punouradhham. Now, the Sitamarhi Bypass will be constructed in such a way that Punouradhham becomes a part of the main route.
- The land acquisition process has already begun following alignment approval from the Center. Construction is expected to begin this year and be completed within 2.5 to 3 years.
Conclusion
The Ram-Janaki Highway is not just a road—it’s a gateway to cultural heritage, regional development, and religious tourism. With funding, approvals, and land processes already underway, this project signals a promising leap forward for infrastructure in North Bihar.
