Famous Mithila and Sujani Artist Karpuri Devi Dies at 94

Today, Bihar lost a famous Mithila and Sujani Artist Karpuri Devi who breathe till today’s morning and passed away at the age of 94. Karpuri’s Daughter provides this info to the media. Karpuri Devi has mastered in Mithila Painting and Sujani art. Her works are not known only in the state and country, but also in other countries like US, UK, Japan, and France.

Karpuri inherited the talent from her mother and other elders of her time. You can say she belongs to first generation of Mithila artist. It’s because of her Mithila painting able to grab some space in the list of folk art across the world.

Karpuri is also the most traveled Mithila artist who visited Japan nine times and works on the Mithila Museum in Japan. In 1987, when Tokia Hasegawa (the man behind Mithila Museum in Japan) invited her to the Mithila Museum in Japan. Initially, She opposes because of the language understanding, but after receiving an interpreter, She agrees to visit the Mithila Museum in Japan. People say Tokia Hasegawa was so impressed of her work that he does not want to let her go.

Karpuri hasn’t mastered only in Mithila Painting but also in Sujani embroidery work for which she has got National Merit Award. Those of you who don’t know, Sujani is an expressive textile art that is made mainly in 15 villages of Bushra and Gaighat Block of Muzaffarpur district, Bihar.

A native to Ranti Village, Madhubani, Karpuri has two children, a daughter, and a son. Karpuri Daughter Moti Karn is also a national awardee in Madhubani Painting and her son is a senior government official in Delhi.

Today Karpuri takes her last breathe in the Heart Hospital at Mangrauni village in Madhubani.
